The early years
The duo, composed of Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina, native musicians from Naples residing in Berlin, formed in 2014 as Nu Guinea and released their self-titled debut EP that same year.
In 2015 they began a collaboration with Tony Allen, original drummer of Fela Kuti's afro-beat group, which led to the February 15, 2016 release of the album The Tony Allen Experiments.
In 2018, through their own label NG Records, they release the LP Nuova Napoli as a tribute to their hometown, where they combine the use of acoustic instruments with electronics and vocals in the Neapolitan language. The album is highly praised by specialized critics. A national and international tour followed, taking them to various clubs and festivals, such as Dekmantel in Amsterdam, Strawberry Fields in Australia, Queremos! in Brazil, ClubToClub in Turin, New Morning in Paris, Strelka in Moscow etc.
Nu Guinea, under the NG Records label, together with DNApoli and Famiglia Discocristiana, curated a collection on vinyl records called Napoli Segreta, a compilation focused on rescuing and reissuing music produced in Naples in the 1970s and 1980s, followed in 2020 by Napoli Segreta vol.2.
The name changeIn June 2021, the duo announced via a post on Instagram their decision to change their name to "Nu Genea"; in fact, the two musicians justified their decision with the following words:
"With reference to the Greek word "γενεά" (genéa), which means "birth," Nu Genea is meant to signify a new birth in our consciousness, as well as a name that more directly reflects the concept of our music, that is, to mix styles and sounds, which throughout history have touched the Bay of Naples, and give them a new birth. This slight change in letters has changed the meaning considerably and reconciles us to the primary goal behind our music."
Also during 2021, in collaboration with French artist Célia Kameni, they released the single Marechià and signed a contract with the record label Carosello Records.
On May 13, 2022, they release the album Bar Mediterraneo, their first under the new name, on NG Records under license from Carosello Records. Previously, with the May 5 date at X-Jazz in Berlin, they kicked off their international tour, with an eight-piece lineup, at the most famous Italian and European festivals. During the summer tour they developed the NU GENEA INVITE project involving international artists on their stage including: L'Impératrice, Azymuth, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Kokoroko, Kit Sebastian, Los Bitchos, Quantic, The Mauskovic Dance Band and Yin Yin.
